The BBC's reportage of the £50k limit news goes on to say that the FSA will be consulting on the possibility of raising the limit further, and also looking into the problems currently associated with some financial institutions falling under the same FSA licence.
I would certainly welcome the unravelling of that particular Gordian Knot. I'm fed up with having to keep track of who owns who every time there's a merger / buy-out. It would be much fairer if every separately identifiable brand had to have their own licence and thus a separate £50k guarantee.

Anyone know why it is being delayed until Tuesday? Why not from today?

I presume the FSA needs the administrative time to advise all their licencees of the change so that they in turn can update their websites, correspondence etc.

Perhaps something bad is going to happen on Monday.0 -

haha, that post amused me.
£50k cover is a start though, agreed it could be higher, but it's a step in the right direction. I for one can now move some money back into the same account, but have defiantly learnt over the past few months to at least split your money two ways!0 -
The 50 limit might save some additional work that is undertaken when savers change banks0
