Well done on your OP's and good luck with the new role. These things all happen for a reason, even if it's not always apparent at the time.

  • I'm feeling really pleased as I've been able to make another overpayment this month.

It was an unexpected windfall - a rebate of 50% of the council tax I've paid on my beach hut backdated 3 years!

I'm not really sure of why I'm entitled to the rebate (and I don't really care!). The forms I'm sent about the council tax each year really make my head hurt - last year every beach hut owner was sent an explanation letter as well - I guess a lot of people queried it.

I've also turned a real corner in convincing my OH that working towards being mortgage free is the way to go. He's now committed too - but he is still a Money SPENDING expert!

We've also decided to sell a load of shares next month when my latest work shares become available tax free. I know they are quite a lot down on last year but they have been steadily going up (slowly) and who knows when they might reach their peak again. I get two lots of shares each year through my work - currently worth about £7000 in total each year. I often forget I have them but I guess they are an important part of our savings.

I may also sell £1000 of premium bonds I hold. I've won 2 x £50 over the past 18 months which is a pretty good return. We do £2 on the lotto each week so we've still got a chance of winning £millions if I sell them!

So all in all quite a good week - tomorrow is the start of my last week in the job I've been doing for the past 11 years before I have a week annual leave then I start my new role (alternative to redundancy). I feel quite positive about it all - there's no point getting down about stuff I can't control. At least I have a job still.

Take care all and have a good week

    TT
  • Well done with the mortgage Treacle Toes:j. I think your attitude about the job situation is right, there is no point in worrying about a situation out of your control. Try to look on the positives in that you will be close to home. Goodluck and keep us posted. WABL

I don't post very often but I feel I must today as TWO very exciting things have happened recently.

    1. Our mortgage is under £100k! About £96k to be more precise! Not bad as we only remortgaged in Feb for £117k. How I've made such a massive overpayment is by selling my work scheme shares and I've also cashed in £1000 of premium bonds. OH and I have decided that each time we knock £5k off we will go out for a slap up dinner to celebrate (not very MSE but who cares!)

    2. The second thing I feel is even more of an achievement - my husband is as committed to being mortgage free as me! This may not sound much but until recently he had no interest in the mortgage, and was a money SPENDING expert. How do I know he's committed? He mentioned to me yesterday that he tells a lot of people at work about his "fab offset mortgage", tries to give them advice, and that he even told his hairdresser that "everyone should be overpaying when the interest rates are low rather than just having a lower monthly payment". He really has seen the light.

So now WE are officially trying to be mortgage free in 8 years!

I think the slap up meal is a great idea you have to have things to aim for and to make the journey enjoyable.
