Half price LOFT INSULATION at Homebase

If anyone is planning loft insulation work then take a look at Homebase just now....£4.99 per roll for Space Blanket Loft Insulation (100mm thickness) and £9.99 per roll of Space Combi loft Insulation (100mm thickness). Both are half price (though you have to buy even numbers of rolls to get the maximum discount, essentially it's BOGOF).

This is an instore deal 'while stocks last'.

Hope this helps

Wickes have also got a similar offer but by the time I priced up the materials, it wasn't worth doing it myself. Even with the Homebase/Wickes offer, the insulation cost was more than £180 (to cover 60sq m), it wouldn't have fit into my car and with local grants, most energy companies will come and do it for you for less than £200.

If it's your own place (or you get landlord permission), then I'd suggest getting someone in.

I'd also agree with this. I paid £150 for a top up of nine inches on top of the existing three inches - making a foot of insulation (300mm). To do it myself would have cost more, several trips to the shops, a lot of blood sweat and tears, and if I'd have come through the ceiling, it'd be my problem! Give your council or energy supplier a call.

Note that the advice now is to have 10 inches (250 mm) thickness - this tends to mean rolling out insulation between the joists, and then another wider layer on top in the opposite direction.

Might have to go check this out. I'm looking for some to go under the floorboards as we have a large cavity at the front of the house.
