Moved house, not informed insurer

Hi. I moved into a new housing association flat last week and although I have paid a yearly premium for home contents insurance I have not yet informed them of the move. Last night there was a major fire at the flats caused by a resident leaving a chip pan on the cooker. Although my flat is ok apart from smoke dust damage which I have cleaned up there is some smoke damage to a newly fitted area by the front door which needs to be professionally cleaned. My question is would my contents still be covered at my new address even though I have not yet informed them but have paid the premium. Thanks

  • IMO no. You are insured for the property you put on your application until you change the address and pay any additional premium if needs be due to potential new risk.

Thanks for the information. I thought this would be the case, so its a lesson learned.

You should inform them of the move ASAP.

The week's delay won't be a major problem for most insurers.
  • I'm really pleased for you that the damage was relatively minor. :)
  • Agree, cant see your insurance company covering a risk they no nothing about and if you contact them its likely to be logged as an incident. Is the carpet on the inside of your front door ? or a communual area.

Other than that if you do need to pay for it yourself at significant cost, there is an outside chance if it can be proved negligent and they have insurance to claim of the other resident, but that is only an outside chance.
