contents insurance, any suggestions?

I have had contents insurance running for 5 years, ever since renting my first home. Never looked at changing, never thought £9.87 a month was too little/too much etc...
I remember when I set it up with Tesco all those yrs ago I wanted to know if for example I spilt nail varnish on the carpet, would it be covered? yes... If my TV packed up, would it be covered? yes... So I naturally said, I want that one...
Anyway, never needed to claim, each yr just looked at the renewal, gone up 50p a month big deal. That was until I lost my engagement ring. Sorry, you are not covered for that. So what am I covered for? flood, fire... I live on a first floor flat... my carpets/my tv/my ring not insured.
I went loopy. Cancelled it there and then.
I now need to get some decent insurance that covers all that and my mobile phone (they want £11 a month - carphonewarehouse).
Does anyone have a suggestion?
I tried all that confused.com stuff but because I live in a S/O home I buy and rent, I am not liable for buildings insurance AND the building was built in 1937 but only converted from derelict in 2005 so I cant really answer them properly.
Any advice what I should be asking/looking for?
thank you......

when you ring for a quote, you should specify exactly what you want insured,
they should then send you a schedule for you to check.

The trouble with insurance is that they rely on us to be complacent and just renew each year (lots renew automatically) my own experience with CIS
is great, they remind you that the insurance is due and include the schedule
for you to check, i have checked mine and found discrepancies, rang them
and tey have sent out another for me to check and ring them to confirm.
If you need the full works, accidental damage, items away from the home
they will normally ask you but other comanies dont. Just a point that not a lot of people realise but if you make an enquiry about claiming this is put down as a claim on your insurance history. So, if you have enquired about something twice a year for 5 years even if you have not gone ahead with the claim - hence you have claimed 10 times. Crazy i know but that's how they work.
Personally i would go with one of the decent names in insurance.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
