I'm a dinosaur.....lol

Okay

What's the big deal about Ipods? What the difference between the ITouch pod and the Itouch phone?

I currently use a portable CD player on the way to work....and doing fine, so just wondering what's the big deal that i'm missing out on.

Also, how good are these Ipods and phones for surfing the internet? If they are really good, then why do we have laptops? So people can type?

:rotfl:

Sorry to sound so daft. It's just that i picked up some brochures the other day, but there is so much advertising in them that i wouldn't know what is a bargain and what isn't.

I don't know whether to get a laptop for my home or just get an Ipod to play with....

thoughts?

experts? (but not too expert please - cos i won't understand)

I have never had an ipod, never used itunes. Don't have any need to. I buy all my CDs from shops and stash them in my car.

Other than that I never listen to music, except if I want to, I'll use youtube or download the music other ways.
  • Thanks Lokolo

I was just interested in the Ipod because it has in built wifi and internet. However i'm guessing you are limited to what you can do on the internet.....

I only use it for instant messaging, email, you tubing....sometimes a bit of research on google, read the news, etc.

If i can do all that on an IPod then it would be great for me, cos i wouldn't have to pay out for a laptop and connection fees.....?

but otherwise....just looking at some of the reviews, it's really just a toy.

(ok, waiting for the backlash now...lol)

    Yep- it's just a toy.
You can't do any serious browsing on it.
  • thanks samhale

what a shame......wonder why people buy it then.

Still instant messaging, email, you tube.....are there fees for connecting to the internet. Sorry for being really thick about all this.

ok... as i own an iPhone, i can give you a bit of information about it..

now, if you go for an iPhone, you have internet, email, you tube, etc etc anywhere where you are, because you have your mobile phone, connected to the internet, and also, you can pickup wifi signals, and connect to them, and do what you want..

if you go for the iPod Touch, you only have wifi, and really can only use that within your own house..

now, you can browse the internet quite well on the small screen, you use a multitouch interface, basically 2 fingers to zoom, and scroll around the screen...

if you want to type, a small keyboard pops up on screen, and you can type using that, which i can type using 2 thumbs..

if you want a decent internet device as your main browser, consider one of the new mini laptops, which retail at the sub £300 mark... if you need to get on the internet when you're out and about, (i do) then the iPhone is useful. Also, when away on business, i can use it to browse the websites i like going on, and i've been known to use it on here and reply to posts etc....

now, onto the music part of the iPhone / iPod Touch... we'll talk about the 16gb version of each, just so i only have to spout 1 set of figures...

your portable cd player, i assume plays normal cd's, which hold 74 minutes of music. So, an average music track is about 5 minutes long, you can hold 14 - 15 tracks..

and iPhone / iPod Touch, holds 16gb of music, which, a standard 5 minute track, is about 5mb, so all in all, you can hold 2000 tracks, or (average 14 tracks an album) 142 of your albums. You can choose what to play when you want, by using the touch screen, you can create playlists, of say a track from lots of different albums, or just put the whole thing onto shuffle, so you don't listen to the same track for 166 hours. say your commute is 1 hour each morning and evening, so that is 2 hours a day, so 83 days of different music tracks, without having to put a different cd in your bag, etc....

I drive a lot for a living, and couldn't do without my ipod in the car. for example, tomorrow, I've got a 2 hour drive, so i'll select a 2 hour playlist, and listen to that.. for the return, i'll choose a different playlist, and listen to that... on monday, i have a 3 hour drive, so i'll choose something else to listen to... i can change the music on my iPhone simply, and then i have a totally different selection of 2000 tracks.. etc etc etc...

    one device, does everything!

if i wanted to carry around all my music, my car would be very full of cds, and i'd probably have an accident once every 74 minutes changing the disc, especially on the long journeys... ;)

hope that is informative and helps you..

    Nonsense.

Safari on the iPhone/iPod Touch is a fully featured web browser. The only limitation is that at present Flash doesn't work on it. Adobe are currently working on a solution though.

It might not be the best thing to buy if it's going to be your only means of accessing the internet, but it's certainly not "just a toy".

Life without music would be a mistake (as Nietsche said). The best way to enjoy music at home is to listen to vinyl records on a really good gramophone.

The only value of the ipod and iphone is that they can serve as babe magnets. I airheaded blondes are your thing, go for one that looks flash. But don't expect it to do anything else for you, or you risk disappointment.

How about 'don't knock it 'til you've tried it'? Have you tried lugging your gramophone around in your pocket all day, only to use it for a few minutes on the bus? I'm sure the rest of the bus would enjoy your music as well, as I'm pretty sure it won't have headphones.

If you're reluctant to try new things, fine, but don't put others, who sound like they might enjoy and benefit from an MP3 player, off because you're unwilling to try something new.

OP, don't be drawn into Apple's flash adverts, you can grab a small, cheap MP3 player for twenty quid to see if it fits your lifestyle, then you can choose to upgrade if it suits you. Look up Creative Labs' refurb store for some decent bargains.
    Super geek.

For example, it would take you hours to browse this website. The naturally wide frame of it would mean you'd be scrolling left and right just to read what people have put.
There aren't many places you can really use it outside of your home, where you have a computer already.
You can only have 8 tabs, and when you do it becomes as unstable as hell.

The screen goes into landscape mode when you tun it around. You can zoom in and out easily, and you scroll with a flick of a finger. It's all very intuitive.

You can use the internet on an iPod Touch anywhere there is wifi. Hotspots are everywhere these days, from train stations, to shopping centres, to cafes.

You can use the internet on an iPhone anywhere you have a phone signal.

I would rarely have 8 tabs open even on my computer. It's not really a deal breaker.
