ok... as i own an iPhone, i can give you a bit of information about it..

now, if you go for an iPhone, you have internet, email, you tube, etc etc anywhere where you are, because you have your mobile phone, connected to the internet, and also, you can pickup wifi signals, and connect to them, and do what you want..

if you go for the iPod Touch, you only have wifi, and really can only use that within your own house..

if you want a decent internet device as your main browser, consider one of the new mini laptops, which retail at the sub £300 mark... if you need to get on the internet when you're out and about, (i do) then the iPhone is useful. Also, when away on business, i can use it to browse the websites i like going on, and i've been known to use it on here and reply to posts etc....

thanks for that. My usuage of the internet is very basic so i'm thinking it would be enough for me. The Iphone sounds better...since i need a new mobile phone as well in any case. If i can browse websites like this and read email and do instant messaging, that's a hell of a lot more than i can currently do at my flat....since i don't have a computer there.

I might be thick about all of this but i don't really understand how mobile phones access the internet. I currently have a cheap £25 phone and i cannot access the internet on it, although in theory i should be able to do. I can usually only get the front pages of websites like this one and i cannot do anything interactive at all. Also as it's a pay as you go phone it costs a lot to ensure enough credit to access the net and then it's usually not worth it.

So with mobiles you can access the net when out and about but with WiFi you cannot? (apart from where places are wifi activated, like mac donalds, starbucks, etc?)

When i see people on the train on laptops, how are they connecting?

I'm really sorry to be so uninformed about this, but i don't live with anyone and most of the people i know are dinosaurs like me! Yet i love technology and would love to learn all about it given a chance!

thanks for listening and any replies would really be appreciated

OP, don't be drawn into Apple's flash adverts, you can grab a small, cheap MP3 player for twenty quid to see if it fits your lifestyle, then you can choose to upgrade if it suits you. Look up Creative Labs' refurb store for some decent bargains.

Thanks for the reference. I'm more interested in a device that keeps me in touch somewhat, with the net....but without having to pay out for a computer or laptop at the moment. I've been given £100 as a gift and told i must spend it so i was just thinking perhaps an Iphone Ipod would be enough for the moment.

So i guess what i'm saying is although i love music, it's not really the music that would draw me into buying one. I don't drive at the moment as i've just sold my car, so changing discs is not a problem for me on the train.:D

You can only have 8 tabs, and when you do it becomes as unstable as hell.

I tend to only use up to 3 tabs, so might be ok
  • One sales assistant has thrown more confusion my way.....telling me i should get a web book!

Now i ask you, what are they but little laptops that fit in a handbag? :rotfl:

    I HATE not understanding technology!

Anyone know of a book or website where people like me can learn? A technophobes forum or something? LOL

    Yep- it's just a toy.
You can't do any serious browsing on it.

    its a Phone

Its a music and video player

Plus you can go on the internet just like a pc...yes without wireless it can be slow

i use it to get my emails

    read the news

    check my bank accounts

    look at !!!!!!

    youtube

i can even get music from my friends iphone/pc and they don't even have to be anywhere near me

i can control my pc (actually see my pc screen on my iphone and do everything i could with a mouse/keyboard)

i can use it as a remote when playing music on my computer (my pc plays music through my amp)

I can find out the name of any music i hear wherever i am by letting my iphone listen to it and it will tell me who what when where that music is

i can check the stock market

    i can check the weather

i can check my loctation and use the in built GPS to find my way to anywhere

it will even tell me traffic info

i can convert ANY value whether it be lbs to kg etc at the touch of a button

it will even speak to me in a different language when i work overseas (which i do)

It will tell me what shops are near me or cinemas and whats playing at the theatre...banks...petrol stations etc etc

So no not really a toy and i have often looked at this website using my iphone when i'm away

I can connect completly FREE to any BT openzone or cloud wireless network

bear in mind that if you listen to a sales assistant they'll sell you that, then sell you a contract to get online, and then sell you a kitchen sink...

if you have decided on an iPhone and think it will be the best for you.. maybe nip into an Apple or an O2 store, and test out the iPhone, and then maybe nip somewhere else and test out these webbooks and decide exactly what you want...

  • Well i'm quite interested in these web books now, since i can get one for roughly a similar price as an IPhone.....and a keyboard must be more advantageous. That said i love the IPhone as well.

The web books operate with a stick, so they use mobile boradband. Don't get wireless, but then if you are paying about £15 a month for connection then i guess that doesn't matter?

Just wonder whether they are safe, or do they carry the same risks as mobile phones....guess so.
