Dear MoneySavers,
Whilst watching TV yesterday I turned on the washing machine- the TV went to standby and started flickering on and off...I noticed the red light on the extension cable was also flickering....replacing the fuses on both plugs didn't help the matter as when I turned them on simulataneouly the same problem happened again!
Also later in the evening the house alarm siren started spontaneously and then in the morning there was smoke coming from the socket where the paper shredder is connected.
The TV, washing machine and paper shredder are all in seperate rooms.
The fridge freezer also seems to be developing a problem....
Any ideas on how I should proceed, there is obviously a problem but I have no idea what

Get an electrician in quick, and check your smoke alarm works. Turn off everything you can live without overnight and when you are out of the house! If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

Do you have fuses or do you have the type you can reset? Have you checked that the fuse wire of the fuses is of the correct rating?
Are you in a flat / on one floor? Sounds like you have a ring main problem, and a serious one at that.If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

Thank you for the responses Emphemera and others.
The electrician came round today and fixed the problem by re-fitting the sockets, both in our front room.
I wasn't home at the time so don't know the technical details.0 -
Aah, thanks for the update....was worried about you!! :0)
Glad it's all sorted and everything's ok!If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.
