NHBC claim

My house is being repaired by the nhbc...however un aware to myself they took my kitchen apart and stored it in the garage for the passed 3 months where there are feild mice.Wheni called round to see how the repair was coming along i was horrified to see it was being stored uncovered in my garage which is also dirty/dusty as i dont use it,,they had also stored my toilet and wastepipes on top of my kitchen units in the garage (yuk) and the remaining ones kept inside my home(living room) and used as work benches for drilling/sawing on..I told the nhbc i do not want that kitchen re instated in my home due to the manner it was stored and being used for drill benches. They told me it was going back in wether i like it or not.My family and freinds have told me they do not want any meals or refreshments from my kitchen as it turns there stomachs also by the manner it was stored and used.....I have even thought should i buy my own new kitchen and let them fit it(compromise) ,,,but why should i????Help

Presumeably, the contractors doing the work have been instructed by NHBC? ( I ask because a recent claim I made I used my own contractor and NHBC said they would not have any involvement and there would be no "guarantee" in terms of the work done if I used my own which I accepted) So, if it's an NHBC contractor I would contact NHBC directly and complain about the contractor and their work practices. I am no expert though, just what I would do if the contractor is taking the pee and not taking note of your concerns. Tell the contractor this is what you intend to do. They may get struck off as being contracted to NHBC if your claims are substantiated.

Whether you would get a new kitchen is unlikely TBH. I understand that is not nice/hygienic but have they actually caused any damage to the units etc by using them as benches.

hmmm i think that myself really , i dont know if those units were damaged as they were being used as work benches at the time,,,The nhbc did ring me and said the kitchen will be staying put, and that all the units were put back in,, i think the nhbc are "thick as thieves" with this particular contractor. It just p**ses me right off when i have to comply with so many h an s issues in my own business,,i couldnt hang someones coat up in the same conditions as what my kitchen for 3 mths was stored in

I can't work out from your post whether the kitchen is now back in situe but I would take photos or would have and sent them on to NHBC. There must be a complaints procedure and the work should be guaranteed. If you have paid any excess as was required with the work I had done I'd ask for a discount off that. I understand that having soil waste pipes placed on your kitchen is unpleasant to say the least. Of course if they have damaged your units then you should try and claim, they will be insured etc but proving it and the hassle of doing so may make it not worth your while. Get your rubber gloves and bleach out. Yuk! Personally, I'd complain even if I got nothing out of it as if the contractor gets lots of complaints about then they might lose the NHBC contract and save another poor soul.

I had an insurance claim a while back and all the contractors were through the insurance company. Their workmanship was the absolute pits. It was a rented property and after calling them back for the second time and told them to get stuffed as I didn't want them back in my house ever again. I could have done a better job with a blindfold on and my hands tied behind my back. :rotfl:

I cant see a problem here, aslong as the kitchen is refitted to the original standard, and that there are no damaged units, door, worktops or any other items, then no problem.

As too the animals, the mice etc. Thats no worse than what your cat / dog may do when your in bed to it.

    Though..I can prescrible this..it works wonders.. :)

  • Sorry but because something is yucky does not mean you will get a new kitchen out of it.
People have different levels of yuckyness. For example some people will be sick at the thought of working in sewers etc but others do not have a problem with it.
The best you can hope for is for it to be cleaned with bleach to kill 99.99% of all germs, that's it.

After it's installed, if you find damage then that's a different story.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:

and i agree with the above also
  • Has anyone else had a problem with NHBC doing work on their house and how do you deal with them. Is employing a surveyor any good?
