how good are washer dryers ?

currently got a washing machine and a 3/4 size dishwasher in the kitchen

no more space in there... only other space for an appliance is a cupboard (has a power socket)

any opinions on whether to buy a condensing dryer for the cupboard, or to save the cupboard buy a washer dryer to replace the washing machine?

  • i had a washer dryer and it lasted 9 months, was insured with comet and they told us that they wouldnt replace it with another washer dryer as they are always breaking down so gave us an upgraded washer,i wouldnt buy one again it took hours to dry and had to half the clean washing as it wouldnt do a full load

I've only had the misfortune to use one in a rented flat and it was useless. complete waste of electricity IMO as you normally ended up with warm wet clothes. We got a condensing tumble drier for our flat and put it in a large cupboard which worked well.

I have one from John Lewis- own brand - and it works really well! Although only downside is- that you need to dry a wash load in 2 loads! But for me that's not posed a problem, because in a normal wash there will always be some clothes that can't be used in a tumble drier so I just remove them at the end of the wash cycle.
  • We got a washer dryer & although it's not perfect it is better than having damp musty clothes stinking up the house.

    Takes ages to dry anything.
    I hate migraines.
  • My washer dryer is still washing well after 17 years, as is the 2 year old tumble dryer.

I've the same and it's fine, before that I had Hotpoint and Indesit makes and they were never a problem both worked realy well for years.

Do you mean it was only 9 months old when it broke down, or was it secondhand? I'd have insisted on either a replacement washer dryer or separate washer and dryer to replace the broken down washer-dryer (unless the small print says washer dryers aren't fully covered, but even then you'd still be covered by a standard warranty if less than a year old).
Washer dryers tend to be much less efficient than separate appliances, and many have the issue already mentioned that they won't dry a full washload, so if you wash a full load you have to separate it before drying. Even then it takes ages and uses a lot of electricity. Nonetheless I have a washer dryer because my kitchen doesn't really have room for a separate dryer (unless I put the bin next to the radiator, which is probably a bad idea!)
