Assuming system restore is working correctly, this can retrieve individual files:

If your system restore is working and you lost the files recently then shadow explorer will get them back for you. It's free too!

If you reinstall Vista from the original disc, it should automatically save the contents of previous identities in a new folder - (windows.old i believe it's called)

No matter how rubbish the Vista recovery thing is, at least you don't lose anything when doing a complete reinstall.

Exactly what i did used the disk to reinstall choosing the no loss of data option but unfortunately my music, pics and docs dissappeared. So you believe they will be in this folder then?
