American Express Gold charge card annual fee refund

I have an Amex gold charge card along with their platinum credit card. A year ago, as usual they charged me my annual fee, but in true Money saving expert style, I called them to cancel the card and refund the charge, as I am no longer prepared to pay £125.
I rarely use the card and use the Amex platinum credit card most of the time, for the points awarded as I use them for transatlantic flights, but i do not get charged for this card as it is free with the Gold charge card.
When I called them, they happily offered to refund the annual fee and let me carry on using it as I am a 'good customer' (or words to that effect!)
So you can guess when my bill came in again last month with this years fee applied, I called them again and hey presto, another year of fee free card usage!
Not bad considering they also charge quite a lot of Amex points if you want to use them rather than cash to pay the annual charge.
Hope someone finds this useful!

Thanks for your post Charlotte but I am now a little confused. I too am a Amex Gold charge card holder and pay the fee just so I can collect the Membership Reward (MR )points. At no time have I been offered an additional product by Amex and certainly not a platinum credit card. Perhaps this is due to the fact that I have only held the Gold card since June this year and I did apply for the Blue cashback card in September.
Am I correct in thinking from your post that you are collecting MRs from both your Amex charge card and credit card? I believed you could only get tiered cashback from Amex credit cards (eg. Platinum and Blue) and not MRs. Therefore, if you hold a charge card AND a credit card with Amex can holders demand MR points be earned with both? Or perhaps are you earning both MR points and cashback with your Platinum CC. Now that would be interesting!
Could you please clarify these points for me? Cheers, Jonny.0 -
Hi Johnny,
I have been with amex for 9 years now, I think it takes a bit of time before they start offering you other facilities eg. the platinum credit card, but if you are a reliable customer and use the cards a fair bit they probably will sooner or later.
I have always been able to earn points on my credit card from when I opened it which was a few years ago now. I think they have changed the t&c's since then so that you can only get cashback not rewards, but not 100% sure on that one. I don't earn any cashback at all, only earn membership rewards.
Hope this has clarified a few things for you!Sexkitten

Thanks for that Charlotte.
I had read a post from another OP a while back who stated that he got MRs from his Amex Platinum CC but this was dismissed by a fair few on this site as being a wind-up. I guess he was telling the truth all along and must have applied at the same time as you. I was not aware of any changes in the T&cs. I suppose I will keep using my cards and will wait and see what they offer me. Cheers, jonny0
