Seperation / Money Advice

Hi, This is the first time I've posted on here but I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice...

I have been with my partner for a year and a half and we've lived together since August last year... The flat is rented in both names and we both pay the rent and bills according to our salaries.

We got engaged in July but things have got so bad that we have been talking about splitting up. Apart from cancelling the wedding we have booked neither of us can afford to move out.

I am £16k in debt which started after a bad relationship some 5 years ago... I have finally made arrangements with my creditors and getting back on my feet. My partner is nearly £60k in debt, I only found this out last week, I always thought it was around £30k!! He is in the process of arranging payments to his creditors.

Neither of us have overdrafts or credit cards now or any savings! One or both of us need to move out of our current flat (rent is £725 a month alone)... We're stuck, neither of us have a deposit for new place!

Any advice....?

Thanks,
MM

Firstly, if you are seperating then I wouldn't worry about your partner's debt.

What about moving out and maybe flatsharing instead?

Have you got a housing advice centre anywhere near you? You could do a "google" search for "housing London" (eg.). You could also try the Shelter website, maybe they can help. Also try your local Citizens Advice bureau as they might have extra info about local housing and ways of raising the deposit. Good luck.

Hi, Since writing my post yesterday my partner and I have discussed our relationship and decided to give it a go... :j

Thank you for your advice and I will consider what you have said if it comes to us seperating. :T

See if you can get some help and support: I believe Relate will see you even if you're not yet married, some churches offer marriage preparation and might be happy for you to have some even if you don't plan to marry in church. And there are these people who certainly offer courses in Bristol, but might be able to point you towards something similar in your area, or a residential course somewhere.

Good luck! It can be hard to sort yourselves out and an impartial listener can help.
