LAW CHANGE! SPENDING OVERSEAS/ON FOREIGN WEBSITES NOT PROTECTED!

Spend on a credit rather than debit card and you legally get Section 75 consumer protection, meaning buy anything over £100 and providing some of it is paid on the card, the card company is equally liable with the retailer if things go wrong, valuable extra protection.

The High Court has sadly just ruled this only applies UK bought stuff not overseas.

No really a change in the law, more of a clarification. Also note that some credit card providers will continue to protect you for foreign purchases.

There are some threads about this in the chat forums.

I had heard this also.  I think that Nationwide was one of the providers.  Does anyone know which other Credit Card providers continue to provide Section 75 consumer protection for goods purchased, or ordered from, overseas.

The OFT press release showing the Hight Court Judgement it this:

    November press release

The OFT press release asking for court clarification is this:

    July press release

In the notes the OFT states that HSBC, BoS and Sainsbury's have told the OFT they offered foreign purchase protection, but don't agree with the OFT's views (this was confirmed in an OFT press release of 2002: 2002 press release.)

Also in Nationwide's T&C's they confirm they cover foreign purchases.
