I want to share files between my Windows XP machine
and my Ubuntu linux machine but am having trouble
setting up a network.
Both machines connect to the net via a Netgear wireless
router, the XP machine is wired to the router while the
Ubuntu box is connected via wifi dongle.
Any help appreciated.

If you're using Ubuntu 8.04, the windows network sharing browsing is broken in Nautilus. You can browse them but involves a lot of faffing about creating mount points etc etc.
To browse shares on the Linux box from XP, you need to have samba installed. After that, you need to create a log on for each person who you want to access the shared folders in Ubuntu. To do that, open a terminal and type smbpasswd -a <username> and after that you need to enter a password for them. When they log onto the shares, they'll need to use that user/pass.
In Ubuntu in Nautilus (Places - Computer etc) right click on a folder and select "share" and then follow the prompts.
TBH, it's been made overly complicated in Ubuntu 8.04 and you're best reading through the guide on https://www.ubuntuforums.org0 -
You need to use Samba to set up your network. There's a how-to guide here:
