If you cannot afford a mattress topper (they can be expensive) then why not try a couple of cheap duvets. At the mo my local Mr S has a king size summer duvet on sale for just £3.50 but for a kings size bed a double would fit just as good! Ikea also do cheap duvets and they will basically do the same thing as a mattress topper, although not as good as a memory foam one , it may help.

Or even Tescos do cheap quilts. Although try and go for feather as synthetic quilts really make you sweat.

Our matress is awful and so hard. Neither of us sleeps well but we found that just having a quilted matress protecter on it (thinner even than a duvet) has made such a huge difference.
DH also bought himself a memory foam pillow and said it's very good. I use it sometimes when I've been on nights but it makes my ears hurt. I'm not covered with enough protective fat on my pressure points and I like to sleep with my arm under me. It means my elbows get sore as do my knees. (strangely my Bum never does but it's well padded!!!!).
I also have to sleep with a pillow between my knees and with one to curl up into. The knee one keeps my legs apart enough to stop my back killing me. The other one I found replaced the baby bump as I struggled to sleep and stay comfy after the babies were born. My DS is 5 in December but I've never managed to get my balance back enough to stay in proper position since he used to pull me over so far. So a pillow it is.
The disadvantage of this is that I need 5 pillows at night but I don't care because at least I can get up when it's time to move rather than being a crippled mess.

Sometimes just turning the mattress can make a difference.

That should be done on a regular basis anyway. It is essential to prolong the life of your mattress.
