New Acer 5920 - problems with high pitched and loud emitted sound when closed

I wonder if anyone knows anything about this. I've tried to call Acer but am loathe to call 0870 and the other number on sayno are not working. I've tried to email but each time it tells me that the serial number is not recognised so I cannot email either.

I have just bought an Acer 5920, when I close the laptop it emits a high pitched and very loud continuous tone. When I open the laptop it stops. It seems to be something to do with the mics that are located either side of the webcam at the top of the screen.

I either have to leave the laptop open, fully close it down or turn the sound off completely all the time.

Very annoying!!

My husband tried to disable the mic and has subsequently uninstalled the recording devices. He tried to reinstall it but I said not to bother as I probably would not use it anyway - but it is still making the noise. It seems to pick up everything I am doing, typing, moving around, if I touch the top of the laptop where the webcame is located you can hear the sound amplified so it seems to be something located there.

Can anyone offer any advice?? Is it the surround sound doing this? Or the webcam? Any ideas??

PS. Should I take it back to Comet and ask them? I only got it on Friday.

Hi. Sounds like audio feedback. To be honest I have not heard of this, but it really should happen more often due to the nature of the speakers/microphone placement. To cure just do any of the following lower volume, turn down the mic gain, mute volume, mute mic, switch off laptop then close. Place some foam between screen and keyboard then close.

Thanks TS, I have turned the sound off but even if I am listening to something online (as I have been) now that has finished I am left with it picking up everything I do unless I turn the sound down again.

I googled the machine before I bought it and it had good reviews, the machine itself has not been a problem and I like it, but there have been other Acer models with the same issue I gather from Googling 'Acer Microphone' this morning. Very annoying!!

I bought an Acer 5920 just over 2 months ago and did a lot of research beforehand. I distinctly recall reading about an identical fault to your own in one of the places I looked but unfortunately for the life of me I can't recall where.

As this seems to be an inherent fault of some new 5920s, I personally would definitely take it back to Comet.

As an alternative it may be worth posting your query to the Acer laptop forum.

Hi guys,
like a few other on here I have had my share of problems with this modem, and have found this thread to be more helpful than 3. On that score has anyone tried to install and connect the modem to a second pc/laptop. I am currently having trouble with this as I can't seem to get the laptop to read the modem and therefore get a no network signal.

i have this laptop, and both problems above also.

re: finding a conection i just switch the wireless LAN button on and off a few times and then just try on the icon at the bottom to find a conection.

the sound happens all the time too when i close it, dunno what to do tbh.
