Effects of advising Credit Card suppliers of possible problems.

I am currently at the crunch point but may have some alternative funds provided to me for reducing my £30k. Whilst I do this, for the first time in about 3 years I defaulted on monthly repayment, therefore I have two options:
1. Apologise, mistake and somehow try to ensure they get this months payment to avoid any issues
2. Inform them that I am having difficulties and take it from there.

PROBLEM - As I have not exhausted all my options if I did Option 2 and just informed them would that immediatley go down as a black mark and basically start the ball rolling to get bad credit with them and other financial institutions?
Anyone help please.
