How about trying books on cd too, great for bedtime and car journeys (mine get car sick if they read whilst we're moving).

Can whole heartedly recommend the Book People, fantastic value. Would also recommend charity shops, you can always find books that they might like to try for pennies, and often when people donate a whole series is available for next to nothing.

The first one is called Noughts and Crosses. My 13 year old son thought this series was excellent.

Terry Pratchett writes lovely books for children. I love to listen to my 10 year old son laughing as he reads them.
A book he has asked for is Eragon by Christopher Paolini. A magical book.

oh, and if anybody can find me a new but cheap brain, tell me, thanks LOL
Debenhams had them for £2.50 or something like that the other night. Grow a New Brain. Seriously. There was also Grow New Parents and Grow a New Boyfriend, either of which might be suitable for your 11 year old! I think I posted the details on the Festive Fiver site.

Also in John Lewis yesterday I saw a 'kit' for doing something with brains, there was an eyeball one as well.

I cannot add to the books suggestions as anything I would have suggested is already there ...
