Working tax credit help

Hi, could someone with some knowledge of working tax credit help me out here please

My partner has been off sick from work since January this year, at the time we were both working so not entitled to any WTC. He went onto SSP in late february and after april this year he was entitled to WTC alongside his SSP because it was a new tax year. His SSP and WTC has since ended and and he is now on IB. I'm currently on long term leave from work without pay to care for him at the moment. He's getting better so I'm looking to possibly go back to work for about 16 hours a week.

My question is this:

I've done a calculation on entitledto.com and the tax credit website, and it says I wouldn't be entitled to any WTC even though I'd be working 16 hours, I'm not sure how this works out? I have 3 dependent children if that makes any difference.

  • You are on unpaid leave so no longer classed as working for tax credit purposes. You need to be in paid employment to qualify for WTC.
Your partner wouldnt qualify either as on IB.

Hi thanks for the reply. I went to entitledto.com and tax credit site, and put in details as if I was working 16 hours but it still said I wouldn't be entitled to WTC. I know that I'm not entitled at the moment and neither is my partner because of the IB.
  • Could it be that the 16 hour limit applies to single parents who are working? (And you are a couple.....)
Try again with 30 hours of work.....hypothetically. And I would try and speak to an actual person too/website calculators are great but can't be relied on 100% IMHO.
I wondered about Carers Allowance and DLA but I know so little, it would probably do more harm than good for me to say more than I have so far.
    Good luck.

    What do I know?

  • The minimum 16 hours limit is for a single parent or for at least one person in a joint house hold as long as they have children (or if the working partner is disabled).
