  • Hi all,

I am in the same situation as Nick...almost.

I have just moved to London and have moved in with my girlfriend and her Dad. I am looking to get a mobile phone contract but have been rejected by both o2 and orange. I have looked at my credit report and as expected, me not being on the electoral role at my current address is the only viable reason for being rejected.

The problem is, I cannot register on the electoral role here as my girlfriend's Dad's mortgage will not allow it: if anybody who is not family is registered on the electoral role, then in theory, if my girlfriend's Dad defaults on the mortgage, I could possibly claim that them taking over the property could make me homeless and I could have signed a tenancy agreement with him (although that would be against the terms of the mortgage) and try to sue over it (theoretically).

As it stands I will pay some money towards rent, as will my girlfriend, but it obviously isn't a formal contract or anything. So I was just wondering what can be done about this?

I believe I am still on the electoral role at my previous address (as my mum and stepdad still live there), so what can I do about it? I was thinking I could change my address back on my bank accounts, etc, but then that would be alot of hassle if I made online purchases among other things.

Hope that wasn't too long, and I look forward to hearing your responses!

    Thanks,
    Jon

Why can't you register at your girlfriends address? The clause in the mortgage will be to stop him taking in tenants and thus becoming a business and requiring a commercial mortgage.

If you live with his daughter as a couple then you are family as you would be his son in law were you married. I can't see any reason not to be registered here.

    Edit

Any money you and his daughter contribute is your share of the council tax, utilities and shopping not rent for reasons already stated.
    I have a cunning plan!
Proud to be dealing with my debts.

  • When I was raising a mortgage on my current house, my live-in boyfriend and my 18-year old daughter had to sign a form for them saying that they would have no claim to live there if I defaulted on the mortgage. You could always sign one for your girlfriends dad if necessary.
