Electoral Role Question

Hi all,

I have a question regarding the Electoral Role and obtaining credit.
About a year ago I moved out of my flat and moved in with my girlfriend and her mum and dad.
I use my mums address as my registered address (where all my post goes, etc)

I did not put my name down on the electoral role at my mums address because she is worried that it would cost her an extra 25% a year in council tax as she lives alone.

My question is:
Is there any way I can register on the electoral role at my mums address without causing her (or in actual fact me) to pay the 25% extra.

I am now finding it hard to obtain a loan / credit card. I have been looking through the guides on this website it mentions about being on the electoral role which I want to do without myself paying the 25% extra in council tax.

If anyone have any recommendations, it would be very much appreciated.

kind regards
Nick

  • When did council tax become optional?

Why can't you get your post delivered - and get registered on the electoral roll - at the place you actually live, your girlfriend's parents house?

No - you can't register yourself at your mums house and not expect her to lose her single occupancy discount for her council tax. If that is the route you want to go down, you will have to pay your mum the difference. Everybody else has to pay council tax, why shouldn't you?

    Hey Nick,

I dont have the answer but thought I would give you some inside info. I am employed as a electrial canvassor. residents/tenants who have not completed and return there forms which were sent out by many local authorities by post will soon get a visit by a canvassor.

Information supplied on the form is used by the council with other departments, including housing benefit, and council tax benefit. But this varys from council to council as some are less proactive than others.

Like the person before said, maybe you should consider paying the 25% mum will lose to her directly, i think it would be around 200 quid (she will have a bill). I guess you need to decide whats important!!

I am also aware of a daughter who lives with her dad, and is registered on the electrial register and dad claims 25% single person allowance for the council tax, so it really depends on the council.

One thing though, as you have discovered, the electrial register is checked by many organisations as a form of identity.

    Good luck

  • When you apply for finance you should give them the correct address history which, in your case, means putting your girlfriend's parents house as your current address. Never mind worrying about the council tax, you should worry about lying on finance application which is technically committing fraud. As Beanie said, why can't you be on the voter's roll at the current address?

The electoral roll is not connected in any way to council tax, according to my local council who I spoke to today about it as I am not on the roll at the moment

You will only have until the 15th October to get your details submitted, then when the roll is published on on 1st December you will be on it

You should only be on the electoral roll of the the property you consider to be your primary address, or where you spend most of your time

This is the info given to me by my local council, assuming it's the same across the country but cannot guarantee
  • Why don't you register at your girlfriend's address?
  • Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

I think what I will do is register at my girlfriends mum and dad's house and get my address changed on all my accounts

    Thank again

  • Hi all,

I am in the same situation as Nick...almost.

I have just moved to London and have moved in with my girlfriend and her Dad. I am looking to get a mobile phone contract but have been rejected by both o2 and orange. I have looked at my credit report and as expected, me not being on the electoral role at my current address is the only viable reason for being rejected.

The problem is, I cannot register on the electoral role here as my girlfriend's Dad's mortgage will not allow it: if anybody who is not family is registered on the electoral role, then in theory, if my girlfriend's Dad defaults on the mortgage, I could possibly claim that them taking over the property could make me homeless and I could have signed a tenancy agreement with him (although that would be against the terms of the mortgage) and try to sue over it (theoretically).

As it stands I will pay some money towards rent, as will my girlfriend, but it obviously isn't a formal contract or anything. So I was just wondering what can be done about this?

I believe I am still on the electoral role at my previous address (as my mum and stepdad still live there), so what can I do about it? I was thinking I could change my address back on my bank accounts, etc, but then that would be alot of hassle if I made online purchases among other things.

Hope that wasn't too long, and I look forward to hearing your responses!

    Thanks,
    Jon
