How soon can I leave!

I am currently in the process of transferring to BG click 5. My gas is due to tfr on 15 Oct and the electric on 11 Oct. I am not impressed with the price rise which will leave me worse off than if I hadn't bothered to tfr at all.

Due to being a high user I am desperately trying to keep the costs down and have found that I will be better off tranferring my gas to Npower SOL13 and electricity to EDF Online v6. How soon can i start the transfer process with these companies?

I signed up with BG click energy 5 a couple of weeks ago, i too am shocked at the price rise. I have agonised for ages over changing and now i have, looks like i have to do it all again.
At least as far as i am aware, we have no tie in contract so are free to change to either another tarrif or supplier without incuring a penalty.

How soon? Ooh, what time is it now ...? I'm sure you can leave as soon as soon as you like although there may be a penalty - I don't know the BG click t&c. I'd wait until it's transferred just in case it causes confusion but I don't think you have to.
  • It might be worth speaking to your existing supplier. It could be that you can still decline the transfer to BG from their end (leaving you free to sign with a different company all together)

If not, then, as has been pointed out, there is no minimum contract period, but you will have to wait another few weeks to transfer OFF BG, whilst the paperwork moves slowly along, just like you did when transfering TO BG over the last couple of weeks.

    Thansk everyone.

I have spoken to my gas supplier who says that although I can go back to them I have to spend 28 days with BG before they can take me back. BG say it is too late to stop the tfr going through. Looks like I am stuck for at least 28 days then.
  • My electricity transfer goes through today, my gas on monday. BG told me that once they start supplying there is no minimum and I can begin transferring away from them as soon as I like (even now, before the transfer is complete).

I'm hoping this is right, although I'm not planning to transfer, the margins are pretty low at present. I'll wait for all the online tariffs to sort themselves out.

On the bright side,at least if you tell BG that you reject its Click 5 price rise and that you will be going elsewhere you wont have to pay the higher rates for the period that you are with them.

Also check what cashbacks are available for switching to your chosen supplier via Moneysupermarket/Simplyswitch/ Quidco/Cashback Kings/ Topcashback. ;)

Don't panic - they'll probably take a month before they get round to informing you of the price increase (they actually have 65 working days)
You then have 10 days to inform them that you intend to leave (and so do not wish to incur the higher charge rates) and a further 15 days for a new supplier to contact them to initiate a switch.

If you do this, you will still enjoy all power supplied by them at the pre-increase prices :)
