Time taken to install a BT line?

Hi all,

This isn't a money-saving request as such, but I'm after a bit of advice in regards to a new BT line.

I've just bought a new apartment and last week called BT to have my new phone line setup. There are phone sockets installed in the apartment, and I just need BT to activate the main socket.

Bit shocked when BT told me it would cost £125 for the connection, but alas I need the phoneline so I went with it. Unfortunately, they then stated that October 21st is the earliest they can send an engineer out. That's nearly a month after I placed the order.

I've gone ahead and ordered the line as I can't get cable and therefore assume that BT is my only option.

However, I work from home and broadband is essential to me, so I'm itching to get my phone line as soon as possible. At present I'm having to commute back to my old house which is a right pain in the neck.

Does it normally take so long for a phone line to be installed/activated, or am I missing something? There are already other houses in my development that have active phone lines.

I'm clutching at straws, but is there anyway I could get the phone line sooner?

Someone has to pay for the work required at Exchange, and running wiring from your new abode to the exchange etc etc.

You could try calling them and seeing if they have a cancellation.

Have you told BT the line is for business use? A relative of mine is self-employed with the office based in the house and they are on some sort of business package which means they get quickler service (and I think compensation if it takes too long). In our case we moved just over two years ago and it took BT exactly 7 days to install our domestic line.
