Loss of water pressure?

Hi

Yesterday the water pressure in my house was fine... I put on the central heating for the first time in a few months and re pressurised the boiler slightly (Baxi Combi just over 1 year old)

This morning the water pressure for the entire house had dropped to such an extent that the electric shower won't heat the water, the toilet fills really slowly and the water from the taps is noticeably slower.

I telephoned Yorkshire Water and they weren't aware of any problems due to loss of pressure in the area at the time.... but then it was early...

My question is... is it a coincidence that I ran the central heating and this happened or could there be something wrong with the heating system?

Thanks

Are your cold water systems on the mains or supplied from a tank. If its the first then I'd get back onto the water board, if its the latter you need to find out if there is any water in the tank. If there is then you have an issue inside your tank/pipes.

It sounds like an air lock . Has water pressure dropped for both hot and cold or just for cold water ? If just for cold the easiest way to clear an air block is if you have a central mixing tap on the bath. Open all the cold water taps in the house , take an old towel and firmly hold it over the outlet for the central bathroom mixing tap and then open both hot and cold to full. The theory ( and it allays works for me) is that the hot water pressure should force the air lock out of the cod water pipes . If working you should then hear one of the cold water water taps ( at a lower level in the house than the bath ) start to splutter and then hopefully clear the airlock in under a minute or so. If you dont have a central mixer tap then you need to either use a hosepipe or shower hose . If you can clear this yourself you will save yourself the cost of a plumber. Good luck.

  • I am guessing "bleed" the rads was a joke!

Sounds to me like a basic low water pressure problem, nowt to do with airlocks. An electric shower will be fed directly from the mains, so if that water is too low to activate the shower heater, then you need to speak to water company.

As the OP has a Combi boiler, he won't (or at least should not!) have a cold water tank.

Whatever is fitted, the kitchen tap is ALWAYS on the mains water, so check the cold flow there as well

Had a combi bolier in a flat where the pressure was very low in the mornings and it plain didn't work a lot of the time for that reason

    Good point, missed that. :o

Easily done - some people end up with a Combi Boiler and their installer doesn't bother removing the water tank and some taps carry on running from it  (not what is wanted at all).
I have the opposite problem to low pressure (which is lower then 1 BAR) - mine is sometimes above 10 BAR
