Would be nice to wish your Jewish users Happy Rosh Hashanah as you have done with Eid

Options
Just wondered if there is going to be a Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) message at the top like there is one for Eid? Jewish New Year is now and it would be nice to see a message wishing all your Jewish users a Happy New Year.

Is there any hope that one will go up? Or it could be happy Eid to our Muslim users and Happy Rosh Hashanah to our Jewish users side by side in a spirit of friendliness?

Happy Rosh Hashanah, (hope that's the correct greeting)
We celebrated eid yesterday, went to the mosque, ate lots of food, visited family and gave pressies to the kids. What sort of things do you do?
It would be nice to see a greeting on MSE for Jewish users as well, is Rosh Hashanah your main celebration or do you have others throughout the year? We have a new year but it's not really a celebration. We just have the two eids.
  • Thank you Minimoneyme and a very Happy Eid to you too!

On Rosh Hashanah we are celebrating the beginning of the New Year in the Jewish calendar of 5769. We go to the synagogue where we hear prayers and the shofar (ceremonial horn) is blown. We have a meal and we eat apple with honey to signify a sweet new year as well as pomegranets. It culminates in Yom Kippur which is the Jewish day of atonement when people repent and most people fast.

I always thought there were so many similarities between Islam and Judaism and its a shame we can't celebrate those more :)
  • How lovely to read about how people are celebrating the festivals instead of arguing about them as they are on another thread!

Someone there said there's a place to suggest spwcial things to be included on the banners - if I can find the thread I'll post a link here.

Happy Eid and a belated Rosh Hashanah.

    Hi

You'll find there's a Shana Tova in the PS in this weeks email. The only religious festivals we include normally are Diwali, Chrismas, Easter, Hannukah and this is the first year we've done Eid.

Sadly sometimes there are clashes and there isn't space to do them together, though rest assured Hannukah will have an image. I deliberately don't do Rosh, as many people won't use the web during it as its prohibited, so i prefer to do a festival like hannukah that isn't a chag.

Chag sameach and I hope you go well over the fast.

Deary me, I knew people would be fasting on the Day of Atonment, didn't realise that extended to a week's abstinence from the internet!

It's not quite like that Sue :)

On Jewish holy days just like on the Sabbath day (Sat) there is a prohibition against working. The definition of what this includes varies amongst different jewish people - for many orthodox people, driving, creating a spark (ie turning on the lights) and using the internet is part of this.

Yet jewish holidays and holy days are not always the same. The New Year (Rosh Hashana) is one of the holiest festivals and lasts two days (Mon night to Wed night this year) and Yom Kippur (day of atonement) is ten days later and is the holiest day of the year.

Interestingly Hannukah which is a jewish festival isn't a holy day, so workign isn't prohibited. :)

  • Although there are a lot of Jews who either don't keep the shabbat restrictions on holy days, or only keep them on some (Pessach and Yom Kippur, perhaps)?
