Wonder if anyone can advise me. I have bought a car and have been told by several people that the registration number plate might be worth selling. My question is if i do that how do i go about getting a new regiatration number for my car. Do i have to buy a cheap registration number or will D.V.L.A send me a new one.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks Emily

    what is the plate?

you will need to pay for a retention certificate I think, so about £80. Not sure whether you then need to replace it, or whether the original plate is then returned to the vehicle (which I would presume would be subject to an additional fee)
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

Not all registration marks are transferable. If it isn't, it will tell you in section 3 of your v5

The car needs to have an MOT for you to be able to transfer it.

If you were to remove the plate from vehicle to sell then there are 2 ways to do this, in either process you will get a replacement numberplate issued to the vehicle as part of the process which is included in the fee.

Option 1 is (if you already have a buyer with a car) then you can transfer plate directly to their vehicle, which costs £80. It's called a cherished transfer. You can get application form V317 from www.direct.gov.uk.motoring You submit form with V5C registration certificate's for both vehicles, MOT's for both and fee. Both vehicles need to be taxed. Plate will be transferred within 7 working days and you will get replacement one issued to your car. you will be given a certificate to take to a number plate supplier and you pay to get the plate physically made.

Option 2 - you can retain the plate, costs £105. Form V778/1, your V5C,MOT and fee. Same time frame etc. In this case plate goes onto a certifiicate valid for 1yr (renewable every yr for £25). When you have someone to buy it you can add their name onto the certificate for further £25 fee. Then they can apply it to their vehicle.

Hope that helps. PM me if you need more info.

Have you considered keeping the original plate?
It sounds a bit like it should be kept with the car.
    Is the car a classic?

No the car isn't a classic. Just got me thinking about selling it as a few people have mentioned the number plate. I may well just kep it.

    Not strictly true.

DVLA will allow transfers to occur after it has expired. I think the limit is either 6 or 12 months after
