I don't know if this is common across all uni library but here are our loan periods and fines. I think they are very expensive for a uni library fine. I want to know other peoples opinions and what other people pay.
Undergraduate Students

Users will be blocked from borrowing when they reached £10 in total for any item or items overdue.
Well I had 2 RRB books out and I renewed them, but I didn't notice but someone wanted both of them yesterday at 12 noon so I have been landed with a £15 fine as I have just got them both back now.
expensive?
what do you have to pay?

My uni library charge 30p a day for every day you have a book that is overdue!
My poor friend managed to rack up £35 worth of fines and isn't allowed to take out anymore books, it's a shame as it was because of the uni's computer library system not updating her books due date for a week that it happened

I took a couple of 4 hour loan books out once, didn't realise they were short loan items and got hit with a £60 fine. You live and learn...0

Ours is more expensive than that

Its £1 for every whole or part of an hour for 24 hours loans... and more than a £1 a day for longer term loans. Crazy

My uni charges £1 per hour upto a maximum of £20 for reference/restricted loan books, and 20p per day for normal loans.0

the fines are there to stop people keeping/stealing books so that other students can't use them. yes they're high, but for some books there is high demand and it's the only way to ensure people don't let them gather dust in their rooms....
and, fwiw, they're only expensive if you keep books longer than you should. returning them on time (or using reference copies in the library if you have to) means no extra money to pay out!!! often unis won't let you graduate if you owe them any money so i wouldn't ever recommend making a stand over library fines.....:happyhear0 -
Sounds the same as ours - 50p an hour for 24 hour loans, 50p a day for 1 week loans...
To be fair the 'punishment' has to be steepish, else people would selfishly keep hold of books that other students might need.April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200 -
wow that's really expensive.
I've had a couple of issues where i've been fined (only a couple of quid) but I've spoken to the library assistants about how it happened (they're fault, not mine!) and have been let off
The person who said their friend was charged loads but it was because the library didn't update her renew dates or something..pleeease tell me she spoke to them about that and didn't just pay up?!0 -

Yes, our library will wrote off fines if they've failed to give the correct notification (doesn't happen very often - usually after they've done an update).0 -
My uni send out letter reminders as well as e-mails if a book has been recalled. If the book is just due back then getting it checked out on the counter will mean it gets stamped, or using the self-service machines will give you a receipt telling you when it's due back. I heard someone trying to get their fines reduced/scrapped and they were simply told that the library wouldn't do it. That as a responsible adult they are expected to know when the book is due back and be able to return it on time. Maybe that member of staff was just having a bad day.0
