Churchill Insurance

Just received my renewal from Churchill - £448.14 a year, payable over the year.
Thought I'd shop around, and found the same deal with Sheilas Wheels for £307.
So rang Churchill and asked what they could do.
They ummed and aahed, and came down to £352.28 (but with a larger excess, it turns out!).
So I've gone with Sheilas Wheels.
Rang up Churchill to cancel and while I was on, asked how they managed to come down by almost £100.
Apparently, it's because renewals are computer-generated, and if you ring and speak to a person, they'll use their discretion and they have some flexibility to reduce the premium.
I said, but isn't that a little dishonest? Relying on your loyal customers to accept you've given them the correct price for the service you're offering? The lovely young lady agreed with me, so I told her I'd tell everyone all about it!
Of course, it's probably what they all do, but I promised her I'd tell my friends, so here we are!!

Isnt it owned by the same company RBS (HBOS)

HBOS Group owns Halifax Insurance, esure, Sheilas Wheels and First Alternative.
RBS Group - the Royal Bank of Scotland Group includes our old friends Direct Line, plus Churchill, Privilege, NIG as well as insurance sold branded as Tesco Insurance, Natwest, Virgin Money, MBNA, BMW Insurance, MINI Insurance, Mint, Egg, Nationwide, Age Concern, Vauxhall Insurance and several others!0 -
No, they are both parts of the different groups you have listed, but HBOS and RBS are not the same.0

Used Churchill for years, few years back checked online and it was cheaper than my renewal. When i rang them they said they couldn't match it. As they were the cheapest anyway i had to end my policy with them and take out a new one, which meant new policy number and a whole lot of paperwork but thats what they wanted.
Following year online was cheaper again, rang them and asked if they wanted me to end the current and take out a new one, this time they matched it.
They give loads of excuses why its cheaper online but its worth shopping around anyway. Would have moved companies but they always eventually beat everybody else.0 -
