Buying/borrowing books. Where can you expect cheap & quick service?

I've been given an exhausting reading list but many books are not available at the Uni library. Amazon offers some of the titles for high prices.

Where should I be looking? Any recommendations?

  • Firstly, you dont have to get them all!!!! Ask the lecturer which primary texts they suggest you buy and which one's are important to read, but not buy. The one's they tell you to buy, you'll usually find yourself using them throughout your studies, saving you money in the future! More often than not, depending on what your studying, you only need a chapter or 2 from most books. I used to just photocopy the bits I needed from the library copy's.

In some cases, text books were all the same, just written in different style's. I used to go to Waterstone's, flick through to see which book I found easier to read and understand, then go home and buy them online! Most books have independant sellers on Amazon that are much cheaper. Mostly used copies, but they tell you what condition their in, but often you can get new copies for alot cheaper. Alternatively, try doing a google product search on the titles you need, they often see who's cheapest for you!
  • try www.bookbutler.com as this website tell you which are the cheapest and if they are new or second hand
