Is it legal to buy shares in your own company?

I'm a newbie at this sort of thing and would like to put down £250 worth of shares in the company I work for, is this legal?

I ask because I was wondering whether it could be considered insider trading knowledge or whatever.

Yes, it would be considered insider trading if you were to purchase or sell shares during 'sensitive' periods as laid out. Best is to ask your supervisor and the Compliance department at your firm on what these windows are, when you should not be buying or selling your company's shares.

    I respectfully disagree Walletwatch.

If mark7144 were a director of the company then the points you raise may be valid; however, as a normal employee he can buy and sell as he chooses.

I directly work for the director and do know a few things about the company's future that the public do not know.

So I can still do it but only at a certain time?
