    Back to the thread.:D

On BBC working lunch yesterday the guy who set up and sold last minute dot com for 500 million was asked what sort of business he would set up if was starting now. He said one that saved people money!
  • Businesses in all sectors that are low margin may profit the most, or if not profit at least survive better than most.

So when you have chosen the type of business you want to run, make your business the lean operator with low overheads and cheap prices!

I think someone should set up a business doing Martins money makeovers for lazy people!!

I so far have done my close relatives (mum, dad and stepmum, and my student sister) I have saved them on average about £800.00 a year and got my dad £2,500.00 of bank charges refunded.

You could even work on a 'no save, no fee basis' and then charge a % of what you save them!!

I know it might not seem MSE ethical, but if they are too lazy to do it themselves then why not? it would be the same as a cleaner, nanny or accountant - there for people without the time / inclination to do it themselves, but still need that job doing !

If Jamie Oliver can 'pass it on' with his ministry of food ethic, why not a Ministry of Money using Martins money saving.

Good luck and if you make some money doing this I want a commission - LOL

Law firms are doing very badly at the mo - conveyancing being one of their biggest earners in recent years as well as personal injury, both of which have had their day!

strange then that conveyancing charges aren't falling

  • Actually a lot of law firms are going bust. In the last rescession, law firms up and down the country went bust and a lot of lawyers were made redundant (myself included). It took me a long time to find another position as everyone was scared about hiring again.

I know of at least a couple of law firms so far this time around who have gone bust.

I agree with you and TW08! I work for a firm of solicitors as a legal secretary in their commercial property department. My firm has made fee earners and secretaries in residential property redundant, and instead of ordering stationery with a supplier, our office junior is being asked to go and buy stationery from Wilkinsons!

Plenty of firms around here have gone bust, and estate agents too.

Our family department has seen a huge surge in new clients though!
  • I feel jobs like architects and architectural technicians should be ok still not for the reason that people will still want their houses designing but because people can't afford to move they are choosing to extend their current properties and still need the drawings producing and approvals granted

Yes that's why I've decided to go back doing this kind of work except not divorce work but doing separation agreements instead.
