I put Spybot Search & Destroy on which found lots evil stuff on a laptop that I don't use much, but after getting rid of these, it's telling me about a registry change, and asking if I want to deny or allow it?? I don't even know what a registry is:o
It opens a little dialogue box which says:
Category: User-specific browser toolbar
Change: Value Deleted
then gives a long string of letters and numbers under the heading 'Entry', followed by the heading 'Old Data' which starts with hex: followed by another long string of letters and numbers separated by commas.
Can anyone tell me what this means, or what I should do? Please?

Just allow it
Download Malwarebytes ~
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
Update and run the QUICK scan
What anti virus and Firewall do you have?:idea:0 -
Instructions here if you need them;
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
After the final dialogue box it will launch HijackThis.
Click on the scan button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Save the log, and post me it in your next reply.0 -
Thanks so much for the answers:T
aliEnRIK: I have a Zone Alarm Firewall (free) and AVG Free 8.0. Both of those have been running for the last few months, and before that, I had Norton AV and the Windows Defender firewall. I haven't used that particular laptop much in the past few months, so I'm not sure when or how all the intrusions happened. Spybot caught 11 intrusions, including a Zlob trojan:eek: , all have been safely removed now.
Reluctant_spender: thanks for the link... I have to download Java before I can get any further with installing it... I uninstalled Java so I could get a bit more space on the disc.
Which brings me neatly on to my next question... how can I uninstall Office 2003? It won't let me do it through the Add/Remove thing in the Control Panel, and CCleaner can't do it either. I'm asked to verify that it's a valid version of office (it is), and tells me it's not a valid patch and that it can't access itWould anyone know of an online wizard or something that can do it for me?

hmmmm ~ what size hard drive do you have, and how much space is left?
Java is NOTHING in size, so this really isnt sounding good (And you need java for lots of different applications, so I would reinstall if I were you)
Update AVG and run a FULL scan ~ I have a feeling theres LOADS more nasties on your computer yet (Probably on there from when you had Norton actually!!)
Uninstalling Office should be easy, its probably been infected with a trojan (Hopefully AVG will cure it)
Honestly now though Splish, im thinking your computer is probably beyond help!:idea:0 -
Yikes, that doesn't sound good!
I've re-installed Java, and run a full scan with AVG, which came up clean. I've run Malaware which also tells me I'm ok, and I've run SS&D again - which shows me a zlob downloaders trojan_pale_ . I'm not sure if it's been removed or not - when I pressed the fix button, nothing seemed to happen. I'll try again later.
It seems to be running much better now (I'm posting on it at the moment), so I'll keep plugging away. Windows also installed XP service pack 3, so maybe that's helping too...
Many thanks for the help - I appreciate it hugely:TI'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.
