I am from Northern Ireland, now living in Manchester. At home there are 4 MOT centres in the province, all of which are governement regulated and who do not carry out repairs. As was mentioned before, this means they have nothing to gain financially by failing you. I never had any problems living at home when I went for the MOT except for the odd thing that I would have to go away and get fixed but they were never anything major. However, here, I have had 2 different cars and they have failed every time I have been for an MOT, or something or other that always requires the garage to work on it, which I find quite unbelievable.
I am really pleased to know that the County Council does in fact test cars. I will be doing this in future. that way, it will leave no doubt in my mind as to the honesty of the people carrying out the test. Thankyou very much for your tip. It has been most enlightening

A new MOT discussion forum has been created online recently.
It is for mainly MOT testers, but I'm sure that members of the public would be made welcome if they needed to ask them questions about MOT issues...
