cancelling card-letter or phone?

I wish to cancel my barclaycard cashback card, do I need to put it in writing or can I just ring them?

With most cards, it's sufficient to ring them up to cancel. Make sure to ask for confirmation in writing however.

If you ring Barclaycard Card Services on 01604 234234, you'll at least avoid the dreaded 0870 numbers

Well just rang them and seems to have gone quite well, they did desperately try to get me to stay by offering me 1% on all spending for 6 months plus £15 "good will" but want to cancel it so I can apply for 5% amex card

My credit score when I last checked was 999, I have 3 other cards other than the barclaycard I just cancelled, do you think I should wait a little to apply for amex or am I likely to be approved now despite having multiple cards? I have no other debt other than mortgage.
