Information on wood pellet boilers

I currently have a 15 year old LPG boiler in the house, but the price of Calor bottles is crazy! I have been told that wood pellet boilers are now available and could well be cheaper. Does anyone have one, know anything about them, or five me an idea of costs etc
cheers

I don't have much knowledged on these types, but do know that they can be specced up for large places like schools etc. I saw some last year at Grand Designs at the NEC (on again in October). They are basically wood burning stoves, but the pellet feed is automated, I think. I got the impression they were more expensive to buy than the more traditional woodburners. Have you considered those? You can get them with a back boiler.

edit: there's some info on this website.

  • I looked into this last year. I was quoted £10,000 - £14,000 to install wood pellet boiler and central heating!!!! However, they will be cheaper to run than LPG. the beuty is that the pellet feed is automated, however, a log burning boiler is much cheaper to install and run - I have seen the boilers for around £2,000 (but not including the water storage tank or installing the radiators. The problem with the log burner is you have to light it which is ok for a stove, but doesn't give you the hands free on a timer that other fuels do. Also, logs are not an old person's fuel. We are still considering whether to get central heating at all (we live remote rural) and at the moment use a log burner in the sitting room, and an electric immersion heater, and an electric panel heater in the bedroom. I light the lpg oven in the kitchen to warm up the kitchen/diner! Still, our bills are: 2 x £80 for a year's worth of logs, 4 x £25 for the gas for the cooker, and £55 per month for the electricity (up from £50 last year).

We are considering putting a hot water heater on the back of the woodburner, and fitting a multi fuel rayburn in the kitchen (to cook and run a couple of radiators off for upstairs). So pleased we have not gone with gas or oil.
