What level of course to get student loan?

DD has just started her second year at uni and is struggling and has started talking about dropping out. I know, from the SLC, that everyone is entitled to 4 years student loan and she has had 1 and could repay this semesters payment that she has just received leaving her entitled to another 3 years of borrowing.

The thing is I think she would like to change to a different sort of course but I don't know what level of course she needs to study to be entitled to apply for further loans. Can anyone clarify what the current conditions are for applying for the loan?

  • She needs to be studying for a Level 4 course to qualify for student loans etc. These will include degrees, foundation degrees, HNC/HND, NVQ4 and some professional qualifications.

Is she struggling because she doesn't like the subject or is she finding the level too challenging?

She's doing Forensic studies and is struggling with the sciences of Chemistry and Microbiology. All the other bits she is enjoying but the Sciences are a major part.

I think she's panicked a bit and is looking for the easy option out but the uni offer a good support system and she just told us tonight that they are discussing extra tuition support. I would love her to stick it out at least for another few weeks to give the uni a chance to help her. However it doesn't hurt to have a back up plan just in case :o . That's why I'm trying to find out what her options are.
