I thought it would be good to do small toy boxes for my girls so
I can fill them with art bits. Anyone got any ideas where I can buy plain, cheap (obvoiusly) wooden boxes that I could stencil their names on?

Do you have a Weyvale Garden Centre anywhere near to you? They have a "Craft" section within the main part which I notice sell thick card boxes and wooden ones.

What do you use for your baskets. Aren't wicker baskets expensive and where would you get one from?

Saw some small wicker round baskets for 99p for 3 or 4 depending on size in one of those 99p shops - can't remember which one, there a loads of different ones all close together near me in Arbroath/Dundee.
Saw larger wicker baskets in B&Q in summer, was £7.99 for 2 I think, no idea where they still do them or not - mind you they would take a lot of filling!
What about covering some cardboard boxes with pretty wrapping paper, or just plain brown paper?
Or, those little cheap plastic baskets you can get in those 99p shops, either cover them, or leave them cheap and cheerful - they are always handy to have under the sink to keep cloths/sponges, spray cans and all the other junk that accumulates down there! Also good in garden sheds/garages and no doubt numerous other places.

  • A couple of years ago I did a sort-of-hamper thing for my mil, it was A Preserve of the Month.I had made a big batch of damson chutney in the Autumn so that became the first installment.I presented it to mil with a written promise to supply her with *the finest handcrafted, jams, jellies and other delights throughout the year*.

I can't remember all of them but January was marmalade, Feb was lemon curd(made in the SC),there was strawberry jam in July, some kind of chutney in Sept and mincemeat in Dec.I tried to use seasonal and local produce - she really enjoyed them and it was fun to do.

You can get a large whicker oval basket with handles in poundland! Really good bargain, and it can be used for something else afterwards by the person you give the hamper to.

there are weird and wonderful tinned fish in Lidl, or else you could add things that go with fish well, like tarragon, dill, and a citrus juicer. If you have the dosh these things inside a fish kettle would be lovely;)

  • My best friend is a country music fan so I am thinking belt buckle, CD of personally chosen music, American candie (he loves them) instant white tea (he hates milk) personalized calendar with pictures of him for each month, spray for his van to keep him awake. I think that might be enough, I don't want to get in trouble by spending too much.
