Wireless - Working 'offline' despite excellent connection

Options
Hi folks,

Yesterday I moved into my new student house and after a little bit of hassle we managed to get the wireless network up and running.

Because of the age of my PC we had to use a USB thing to get mine working but once that had been plugged in all was fine and I was able to get online last night.

This morning it also just about got on, getting to pages, although it was very slow.

This afternoon however when I booted up and clicked the internet icon it told me I was currently working offline. So I unplugged and plugged back in the USB wireless to which it said it was connected to the network, at 54mbps, and had an 'excellent' signal strength. Despite this whenever I try to go online it again says that it is working offline and asks me if I would like to connect.

Any assistance much appreciated.

    Did you press connect?

Also you'll find USB network dongles are the worst device ever. I eventually stamped on mine.

check your settings in explorer. it may be looking for a lan connection first, even though you are wirelessly connected.
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

    That's an Internet Explorer thing.

Try Tools > Internet Options >Connections > Lan Settings

Always detect network settings (uncheck this box for the moment)
Save changes then close the browser.

    Open the browser again

Always detect network settings (check this box)

    Save changes.
