Petrol money??

I'm with Blacksheep on this one, although I do think it rude he hasn't offered (it's good he offers to help with the parking though tbh)!
I give a lift and it doesn't worry me that the other person may be saving money on transport. I see it as me getting good company (I like to have a natter) and as I would be doing the journey anyway, I kind of feel I'd be making a profit out of a friend if I charged, iyswim? Plus you have to ask yourself what you gain from the friendship overall (maybe a lot more than the 'cost' of petrol as it's not all about money).
In your case though, as it does seem more than the odd lift, I think I'd be letting him have a lift if I was going somewhere anyway but I would not go out of my way to wait for him, or do any extra miles iyswim?
Say you leave uni at 4pm and he finishes at 5pm, or he wants to pop to the library/shop, or whatever - well don't wait! Same in the mornings.
Do what you would do anyway and only let him join you if he is makes an absolute effort to fit in with your plans.
If he asks for a lift and it will take you out of your way then don't be afraid to say so.0 -
I am the opposite. I hate giving people lifts. I like driving myself around in my car and hate waiting for other people.
It is not unreasonable at all to ask for petrol money- don't be specific though. Make sure you fill up regularly with him in the car so he knows just how much it costs. He needs to visually see that you are spending that money. Ask him if he wouldn't mind chipping in 'now and again'.
He doesn't cost that much extra in transport costs, but he is getting all the added benefits of your car. Of course he should help!0 -
Ask him for some petrol money, don't just sit and fume that he's not offering!0

Cheers guys, I am in the exact frame of mind as birduk, I love being my own person and driving with my music on loud, on my own in my own time - sad eh.
Either way though of course I don't mind giving my flat mate a lift when we are going the same place.
Anyway, after all the fuss I just mentioned it yesterday, felt a bit awkward on my part but he said no problem and gave me a tenner towards petrol so all is good
Interesting to read different peoples views on the subject, always a funny thing when it comes to mates and money, which is why I didn't want to be out of place. Any hoo thanks for all your advice! The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing:)0 -
Perhaps your friend thinks that because you can afford to run such an expensive gas guzzling car, then you don't need to be given petrol money, and wouldn't expect it? I bet if you drove an old bomb they'd contribute!!
I would arrange to pick up some other people (perhaps from further away) one day, then have hand over petrol money when they get out the car. You could rig the whole thing and even give them the money to give back to you!! Your friend will feel bad...
Or you could spend the next month walking everywhere, telling your friend that you're saving money as the petrol is too expensive!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0
