Protection of cash

I'd welcome any suggestions on the safe way to look after cash raised on a Saturday afternoon if you do not bank with a bank that offers a key operated wall safe.

Thanks.

In my PTA days, I used to count it on the day with someone else, fill in my paying in slips, and take it home with me!

The key thing is for there to be a record of how much cash there was on the day, and a link between that and what was paid in.

We do this, the money is counted by two or three of us and we all write down the total to take home separately. Then one of us will take the money home and it will be paid into our account by the treasurer as soon as possible.

We have insurance (through the NCPTA) that covers us for £500 cash per person so if we have more than £500 we divide it up and a record is made of who takes what home and the treasurer makes sure this tallies with the money paid in the bank. Maybe your charity has similar insurance or could obtain some if it's a regular thing?
