Central Heating query

My Central Heating system when on, sounds like its always filling itself up, sounds like a really loud cold water tap running at full pelt

any ideas if this is a problem or not?

  • It shouldn't be making noise but the cause could be anything from limescale kettling to a pump or resistance problem.
  • one or two options there then!!!

How about if i give more information.

when i moved into this house 3 months ago, i had no independent HW & CH, either both on, via HW controls or both off.

I subscribed to British Gas home care, they came out and replaced a diverter valve, since then the noise has started, does this help you out at all?
  • I would guess that if that is the case it would have something to do with the draining and refilling of the system. There may be air in the pump impeller. I would call them back and have them check it over as they did the work.

We had a similar problem and it turned out our system was overflowing into the valley between ours and the neighbouring house. As the water was draining into the shared roof drainpipe, terminating next door, it was unnoticable to us, but our neighbour could hear it. The cause was a faulty mechanism in the tank in the loft.

Our central heating system had always done the same thing - we put it down to old-age (it's the original system, 30+ years but still going!) but recently after a problem with a broken ridge tile the system had to be drained and after that there were more bangs and clunks than on Most Haunted!! I (being a numpty) had no idea what to do, then good old Dad - "you need to bleed your radiators, Luv.......". He's shown us how to do this (really easy) and the majority of ALL the noise we've had has gone and we're still getting air out!!! The 'running water' noise has stopped as well as a dripping noise we always got in our bedroom as it's just under the tank. You should try this before paying someone to come out....I believe you can buy special Keys for this job, but we used pliers. Hope this helps.
