Spirit, I love your polytunnel and the raised beds look great! I don't have an allotment, I just have my garden, hence the hens, but I'm trying to grow as much as possible, inspired by such things as square foot gardening and Path to Freedom's Urban homestead.
JTB there's no secret to quitting the rat race, you just need to believe in what you want. I still need to work (from home) to earn income to pay essential bills but I've been practicing living on £4,000 for a few years now and know I can do it. The more the garden develops, the more the produce SHOULD absorb the effects of inflation. So far, I haven't had to fall back on savings but living where I do, there aren't any shops to tempt me to spend too much anyway
It was a great afternoon here and I managed to get the triangular bed planted with Maris Pipers. The hens helped give it a final dig over and cleared a few extra worms but other than that, they were quite good at leaving it alone afterwards. I thinned out a few more of the snowball turnips and am pleased to say that the leek seeds have germinated and I seem to have peas growing almost everywhere. My runner beans that I started in the greenhouse are really going to have to go out soon but I'm trying to put off until May. Someone said wait until the hawthorn flowers, so I might just do that.
Shaz, is there likely to be corn salad in any of the lettuce leaf mixes? It looks very like some of the plants I have growing in my [STRIKE]bread tray[/STRIKE] salad leaf planter. If it is, I've had mine under bubblewrap since sowing the seeds and am still covering it up an nights. Of course, I can't read the back of the seed packet to see what was in the mix because I stuck it in the side of the basket and it's now decomposing. :rolleyes:I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

expensive but got me thinking we were at a fish shop(tropical not chips) yesterday and they had lidded polystyrene boxes of a similair size and wondered if these would work ?? well insulated too, i know the chip shops get wet fish in similair boxes but don't think you would ever get rid of the smell
Hi Shaz - I collect up used polystyrene cups after coffee at church, punch a drainage hole in with a knitting needle and use them to sow tomatoes, etc. They are ideal for keeping seedlings snuggly until repotting. Then, when I've selected the plants I want to keep, I take them back to church in the cups and sell them for 50p each for charity - a bargain as I noticed in our local garden centre they are £1.49 each! Recycling with a profit!

Lettuces look great, Shaz! I keep eating mine, so have transplanted a few elsewhere to let them grow on a bit. You are so organised looking, is that cabbage or caulis at the front? I planted both, the labels mulched down and now I can't remember which is which. LOL
Welcome, mummyleads, good luck with your paperwork and allotment when you get started. I'm notta lottie person, I just hang out here because I like it, all I have is my little gardenI reserve the right not to spend.
