Hey MM!
Sorry to hear about your dog situation, but you recognised that it was unfair to leave her all day on her own. Perhaps now you know she is OK, that will help you to come to terms with having to give her up.
With regard to the Christmas situation, I know how you feel. It's rotten that we all feel compelled to "join in" with Christmas when some of us really can't afford to do it. Let people close to you know your situation regarding Christmas - and here's a brilliant idea which my family did last year and it was SO MUCH CHEAPER:
Suggest to your nearest and dearest that this Christmas, none of your family buy presents for each other. Instead, suggest that at some time in January (after the Christmas rush has died down), you all get together and go out for a lovely family meal instead. Spending time with your family is the best present you can have! We did this last year and there were 23 of us - we took over a room in our local pub and all had a great meal together. It was a right laugh and only cost us £25 per head.
That's basically ALL your Christmas presents for £25 instead of £300 / £400 or whatever to buy presents that people may not even want!
At the end of the day, your family will accept that you have greater priorities.
Remember - those that matter, don't mind, and those that mind, don't matter!
