Cables for sky+ HD to plasma

I was talking to a guy in the Sony store about cables and he showed me the difference between a cheap and an expensive one. But I nearly dropped dead when he told me the expensive ones were £129????
My question is: How much do I need to pay for a decent quality cable for a Panasonic HD plasma to be connected to a sky+ HD box and which brands should I look for? TV and box hasn't arrived yet, so I can't comment on quality now, I'll spend what I need to, but don't want to waste money.

use the HDMI cable that comes with your sky hd box.
It is widely Regarded that expensive HDMI cables make no difference to HD picture quality unless perhaps you are planning a very long cable run
Search the sky hd forums on avforums.com and digitalspy.co.uk where you will find the same opinions.
I'm curious, did you see any difference in the picture quality?0 -
Sorry Kevin, I was very unclear. They showed me the difference in the cables (thickness of cable, quality of metal etc) - rather than picture quality with the cables attached.0

Are you going to be watching your cables or the TV?0 -
You don't need to be spending much more than £5 for an HDMI cable.
For the very short runs it's not going to make a difference.
The HDMI cable that came with your Sky HD box is perfectly fine.
In fact I have a 5m HDMI cable I bought off Amazon for my PC to my TV and it is perfect. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

It was a fair comment!
Are you going to be watching your TV or will you be sitting there looking at the £130 cable trying to convince yourself it was money well spent, when it was £125 over the odds.
£130 for a cable is simply for fools who are easily parted from their money.
There is huge mark-up in cables even the £5 cable have a high mark-up - imagine the sick profits that are being made from a £130 cable.
The cable that came with the Sky box is perfect for the job - why waste any more money when it won't make the slightest difference to the picture. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... That's all I use them for.0 -
The reason he didn't show you any difference in picture quality is because there isn't one (despite what some magazines will tell you). For decent low priced HDMI cables see monoprice.com, bluejeanscables.co.uk and ukhdmi.com. Mark Grant also sells good quality ones for around £15 which isn't too bad.
Monoprice and bluejeans are based in the states so you have to add on a few £ for customs but I've used bluejeans with no problems. Speedy delivery and excellent quality cabling.

Sorry I didn't understand.
No, the tv will just be used for watching programmes connected to the sky HD box - we don't even have a dvd!
I really am totally ignorant about cables and the like - but not so dumb that I believed what the guy said in the store without checking on here first!0 -

Sorry, I'm not being very clear.
You said he showed you the thickness of the cable, the quality of the metal, etc.
The only thing that matters is what the picture looks like, which he didn't show you for obvious reasons. A cheap HDMI cable performs the same as an expensive one. The sort of people who buy expensive ones are generally the sort of people who leave the price tags on so everyone can marvel at how much they cost. There are people out there who derive more satisfaction from how much their system cost than they do using it.
He might as well have been telling you the £129 ones were worth paying for because they came in a pretty box.0
