Thanks Stavros (my fav character
)
I did read that before applying for an account. Since then there have been a few scare stories.
When I discovered this site, I was so relieved that there was somewhere I could ask questions and get advice. It would make life easier.
Now it just freaks me out
Time for another glass.
That's exactly what I feel has got us into this mess in the first place, with all the scaremongering that has been going on both here and the media in general. Not content with themselves, they continue to do it, and the suitation gets worse. Until those who spout off unfounded rumours catch themselves on, we won't get out of this mess.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Unfounded rumours?
- northern rock have not been nationalised?
- B&B have not been nationalised?
- multiple American institutions have not disappeared?
- multiple European banks have not needed shoring up?
Its all in the mind of a few people, editors of newspapers, internet forums etc.?
The stock market dropping 20% in 6 months is a rumour? Trades are based on a mixture of tarot card readings, reading tea leaves and sticking a finger in the air?
Confidence has been dented BIG TIME. A few wilder rumours might need to be ignored, but 90% of whats been written has ended up coming true.
And we still do not know where it will end.
For confidence to be rebuilt needs some major signs to switch around. Until basics, like house prices reaching "reasonable" levels too many buyers will stay out of the market preventing that confidence shift.
Unless the $700 billion bail-out goes ahead, and perhaps even when it does, the banking system just does not have the liquidity to start the merry-go-round of lending, so banking confidence remains low.
For how long, is anyones guess.0 -
In my mind, it's the rumour mill thats causing the dent in confidence! FYI, after the event has happened, it's no longer a rumour, so the first part of your post is irrelevant. But until scaremongering stops, we WILL stay in this hole.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

FYI, all the things in the first part of the post were subject to speculation and rumour, BEFORE they happened...
It scares people, all the uncertainty, but that does not make it 'scare-mongering'.0 -

Exactly what I'm saying! The rumour mill caused the run on NR etc, and like any bank, it won't have enough liquid assets to pay every depositor if they all demand their cash at once!Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0
