Dell Laptop Battery not charging

Options
Hey all

I have a 2yr old Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. Only use it for internet use, occasional word processing and uploading photos. I have recently been out of country for 3 months and the laptop was left home, unused during this time.

Since I have been back (9days) it keeps telling me the battery is extremely low - at the moment it is saying it is at 0%. I've used it for approx 5hours each day since my return and it is always plugged into the mains so the battery should be automatically recharging the whole time. If the AC power plug comes out of the back of the laptop the whole thing turns off immediately. It has never done this before  , if the plug came out before it would just carry on working as normal, but with the slightly duller screen! I don't think I've really ever used it without it being plugged into the mains.

Do the laptop batteries need replacing every so often?

I'm not very tech savvy so any help would be welcomed!

TIA

  • Rechargable batteries have a fail safe built in and you may find that the charge has dropped so low that the battery isnt allowing itself to be charged.

You could try to have a rummage round in the bios settings (pressing F2 or del when first starting up to access them) there is often a battery cycling option that may help.

Try removing the battery all together and reconnecting (you never know!)

I have heard of people intentionally charging a mobile phone battery at too high a rate to shock a battery back into life but this isnt recommended!

If all else fails a new battery will be the only option, or indeed just using when plugged into the mains with a bit of tape to stop the cable coming out!

I have had the same problem with a Dell Inspiron 9300 which is just under 3 years old.I looked into buying a new battery, but at the thick end of £90,not exactly cheap,I now run it off the mains adaptor full time.Dell were not interested when I contacted them as it is not part of the warranty that came with the laptop.

I've had similar problems with a Dell battery less than 2 years old.

If it hadn't been a company laptop (i.e. the company paid the ridiculous Dell price), I probably would have gone for one of the £30 compatible batteries from Ebay.

You may not get quite the same capacity, but at least it saves you having to worry about losing what you've been working on in a power cut...
