Resolution query?

Options
Hi,

I want to burn some of my photo's to dvd (set to music) but would like to make it so they cannot be taken off again to obtain a good quality print but I do not want to compromise the quality of the image when viewed on a standard tv.

Pixel dimensions are usually 2408x3009 set at 300dpi.

Have you got any suggestions as to what dpi or pixel size should I set my pics at?

Many thanks.

  • Standard TV Resolution is 640x480 pixels and the dpi will be a lot less than 300 (to be honest I cant be bothered to calculate it) and it will get worse as the screen size gets larger. You would not get a decent print from this size.

If you have the relevant bits you could try to plug your pc/laptop into a tv and see what the image looks like with varying sizes.

Would it also make sense to watermark the images?

  • Have you thought of actually importing your hi-res photos into a video editing programme then exporting the movie to the DVD Video format? By doing so the photos will be the best quality and cannot be taken off the DVD as it will be an actual "DVD-Video". I have edited stills to music like this before very successfully. Depending on the editing package used, you can enhance the experience by zooming, panning across your photos, etc. Laying the audio track would be simple too.

  • Hiya OK Sauce,

Thanks for that information. What I'm doing is using Windows movie maker to do this ie. adding pics, setting to music, altering the transitions etc & burning it to a dvd still using movie maker. Sorry if I'm being a bit thick or showing my ignorance:o....am I already doing what you suggest, which means I don't need to worry about changing the hi res to low res?

    Many thanks.

  • The output would be standard PAL tv resolution if you are using WMM. You would not need to alter the pictures as the software would do this by default, once exported as a movie.
