Cancer is Complimentary

There seem to be lots of these signs around in California. I saw one which was very similar but it referred specifically to the chemicals in tobacco products, as well as one outside some public toilets. I guess the companies are all just "covering their asses" since the ingredients of numerous cleaning products, etc. can have very harmful effects if ingested.0

This is a common California thing and you will see these things everywhere.
If you ever buy a Webber BBQ you will find a sign on it because charcoal can cause cancer according to California and so can using wood chippings to smoke your sausage.
Petrol is also covered by this so you will see these signs in gas stations.
The fact is that it is not a big deal. Just California being daft hence signs that make you think there is something to be worried about when really there isn't.
In the case of a hotel, having taken a quick look the sign could refer to one of the following "substances":
> Product used to clean the rooms
> Lubricants used to keep the lifts working
> Concrete used in the construction
Are you still worried?0 -

I see what you're saying but im more inclined to think that the sign represents the presence of something more sinister than bleach - Asbestos for instance.0 -

If you said this in your review, I'm not surprised they pulled it.
The presence of carcinogenic cleaning products (which are found everywhere), and the fact that California is a very litigious place, both adequately explain the presence of the sign.
There's no need to invent "more sinister" things.0 -

You are making unfounded assumptions there. I did not put that in the review and i have not 'invented' anything.
If indeed it was cleaning products then surely the sign would be in every public place?0 -
Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_65_(1986) for some background. The sign wouldn't stop me from staying at the hotel.0

Nor did it stop me or indeed many others.
Still, it would be interesting to find out what the chemical was - since there is reference to drinking water, chlorine perhaps?0 -

I'm not making any assumptions. I said "if" you put that in your review.
Well let's look at that part of the California Health and Safety Code:If indeed it was cleaning products then surely the sign would be in every public place?
"25249.6. Required Warning Before Exposure To Chemicals Known to Cause Cancer Or Reproductive Toxicity. No person in the course of doing business shall knowingly and intentionally expose any individual to a chemical known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity without first giving clear and reasonable warning to such individual, except as provided in Section 25249.10."
On the list of chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity, as well as asbestos, are such things as aspirin, cigarette smoke, tobacco, steroids, the contraceptive pill, oestrogen, cocaine, vitamin A, saccharin, benzene, engine oil, testosterone, creosote, formaldehyde, bracken ferns, exhaust fumes, diazepam, lead, fumigants, mercury, cadmium, lighter fluid, and some glues.
It's a really really long list and they'd have the same sign whether they had a smoking room, or were stockpiling mustard gas in the basement.0 -
There is no certainty that there are ANY toxic substances present!!!
"Some businesses in the state post similar notices on their premises, even when they are unaware of any listed chemicals being present. There is no penalty for posting an unnecessary warning sign. Because of the overuse of the vague warning, the ubiquitous signs ultimately communicate very little information to the end user." Wikipedia.
So, if your report said there WERE toxic substances present, you could well be accused of libelous and unfounded claims!!!0
