Cladding a wrought iron gate

I'm not sure if this is a daft idea or not!
We have a wrought iron gate down the side of our property. IT would be very easy to climb over, and provides no privacy whatsoever.

Ideally, I'd like a nice wooden gate, but suspect that fixing it may not be so straightforward. That, together with cost, makes me wonder if it would be worthwhile just getting some wood and fixing it onto the current gate. So, is it do-able? Or a daft idea? I'm concerned about the extra weight, as much as anything.

  • You could buy a fence panel to attach to the gate, but the question of how you would attach it.

steel plate or an ally plate would be easier to fix, and prob more cost effective.
    Get some gorm.
  • I've actually done this, for a customer who didn't want her free roaming guinea pigs to escape through the gaps in the gate, but didn't want to pay for a new wooden gate.

I used feather edge boards and a couple of offcuts as cross beams. I fixed it to the metal gate, with half a dozen metal pipe clips.
You need to give some thought to the latch. I drilled a large hole, so I could reach the original catch.
Weight wasn't a problem, as a metal gate is much heavier than a few boards.
The gate was 6 ft high, by 3ft wide.

It worked surprisingly well and looks fine from outside. Two years later it still hasn't dropped at all.

I did mine to stop the bunnies escaping :D
Large piece of wood, secured by thick wire. Has lasted over five years... seen off a number of rabbits:j
